PRE-CONSTRUCTION CONSULTING ENGINEERING SERVICES

FIELD ENGINEERING, TESTING AND INSPECTION SERVICES

During design/pre-construction phases, Tai and Associates can provide additional recommendations and consulting services for the final phases of design and construction planning.  The work items performed may be as follows:

A review and editing of the earthwork specifications to be consistent with the recommendations contained in the subsurface exploration services report.

A written review of the final site and structural foundation drawings to compare with the recommendations provided in the soils report, including review of design changes.

When requested, attend meetings or participate in phone conversations with the design team to discuss and review the development of the final design.

When requested, perform studies and analysis of specific design problems, and refinement and development of recommendations and criteria made during the subsurface investigation phase.

An estimate, in writing, of the quantities of unsuitable soil and rock excavations for bid allowance purposes.

Discuss and review construction procedures and potential complications that may be encountered during construction, such as groundwater problems, unsuitable soil, rock excavation, seismic monitoring during blasting, instrumentation monitoring (tiltmeter, inclinometer, or other).

Review requirements for site shoring.  Tai and Associates can prepare design, plans and specifications for shoring on particularly complicated shoring projects.

Provide additional subsurface exploration services as required to further define design criteria, or to meet the needs of a changing design.

The above services are typically performed as requested by the design team, on a unit rate basis, and with a pre-established estimated total cost.

“Theory -and even very rigorous theory- is required for training and developing our capacity for correctly interpreting what we observe; but at the same time, with theory alone we could not accomplish anything at all in the field of earthwork engineering, an the more plain facts we can accumulate, the better. I always lose my temper with people who think they have grasped the very core of the substance after they have succeeded in representing some artificially simplified phase of it by means of complicated triple integrals; while at the same time, they have forgotten how the soil really looks. Keen observation is at least as necessary as penetrating analysis” – Karl Terzaghi, January 21, 1926
